Not sure what waste type you have? Most jobs are general waste!

Most customers tell us they have “general waste” — and that’s usually right. It covers mixed household junk and clean-up rubbish, such as old furniture, packaging materials, timber offcuts, green waste and everyday junk from around the house.

The main thing is keeping heavy recyclable materials out of the domestic general waste skip. Concrete, bricks, tiles, soil and rocks need a heavy recyclable option.

You can also have a skip bin dedicated to green waste only, with no other materials allowed in the load. It has its own category, so it can be fully 100% recycled. If you’re unsure, tell Wendy what you’re throwing out and roughly how much, and she’ll guide you to the right waste category and bin size fast.

See full rules on our Waste categories page.

Skip bin sizes and waste categories available

If you’re clearing out a house, shed, factory, storeroom, or property in Melbourne’s outer east, the Yarra Valley, the Yarra Ranges, Knox, Maroondah or in the Mt Dandenong Ranges, the key is choosing the right bin size and the right waste category.

That’s what keeps your disposal cost down and avoids hassles on pickup. Start by estimating how much you have, then keep your waste types consistent with the waste type you have booked. If you’re unsure, we’ll guide you fast.

Skip bin and mini skip sizes

  • 2m³ mini skips – small clean-ups, bathroom rip-outs, sheds, tight driveways

  • 3m³ mini skips – spring cleans, bedroom or laundry renos, light DIY waste

  • 4m³ skip bins – kitchen makeovers, landscaping projects, moving house

  • 6m³ skip bins – bigger renovations, builder sites, bulky rubbish removal

Visit our Skip bin sizes page for easy comparisons (like trailer loads and wheelie bins).

Waste categories for skip bins and mini skips

  • Light General Waste – household junk, furniture, packaging, timber offcuts (no concrete, bricks, tiles, or soil)

  • Garden & Green Waste – branches, leaves, grass and weeds only (no soil or treated timber)

  • Builders’ General Waste – mixed renovation waste (in 2m³, 3m³, 4m³ and 6m³, you can include up to 10% heavy recyclables by the bins volume)

  • Heavy Recyclable Waste – full loads of 100% concrete, or 100% bricks, or 100% pavers, or 100% soil/dirt (available in 2m³ or 3m³ only; no fixed weight limit)

  • Mixed Heavy Recyclables - this is a mixture of only the materials listed above, eg, dirt, pavers, bricks, concrete, etc. No weight limits, and no other waste permitted within the load.

Skip Bin Hire FAQ

These are the questions we get asked every day when people hire a skip bin. If you’re unsure about waste types, bin sizes, or delivery and pickup, you’ll find the answer here.

  • How long can I keep the skip bin?

From 2 hours to 7 days, extensions are often available when required at no extra cost.

  • What can I put in each waste category?

Visit our skip bin waste category page for full details of each waste type.

  • Do you do same day delivery? (phone-only by 9:30 am, 1–3 hours, subject to stock/workload)

Yes, call Wendy on 0417 514 763 directly by 9.30 am, phone booking only, subject to available stock & workload on the day.

  • Can you place the skip on the street? (permit needed; not same day)

Yes, but you must have an on-road council permit, which is an additional fee. We have to organise the permit for you. Council permits are not always available for same day delivery.

  • What size skip do I need? (simple guidance; link to sizes page)

Visit our dedicated page for skip bin sizes and see comparisons of how many trailer and bin loads fit into each skip bin size.

  • What can’t go in a skip bin? (hazardous items)

Hazardous Items are forbidden. Visit our Prohibited and Hazardous Waste page for detailed information.

  • How does pickup work? (flexible collection; call when ready)

We make the whole process simple and run like clockwork because we're well-organised and highly experienced. This is the process without the fluff:

You call to book your skip bin, Wendy will guide you through the process.

  • We deliver the skip bin.

  • You load the skip bin.

  • We collect the skip bin on the agreed date, or when you're ready.

  • We empty the load, the recyclers do the rest.

  • Do excess weight fees apply? (possible; confirm at booking)

Only if you exceed the weight limit for the skip bin size and waste category you booked for.

90% of our customers do not exceed the weight limit of their skip. It is only because people are loading concrete and bricks into the light general waste skips.
