How to Order a Skip Bin in Melbourne’s Eastern Suburbs
& the Yarra Valley
Ordering a skip bin shouldn’t be a puzzle. However, if you have never hired a skip bin in Melbourne's East, Outer East or Yarra Ranges districts before, you will discover it isn't a straightforward process. There are many pitfalls along the way for the uninitiated; if you aren't well-informed, you could unnecessarily incur significant costs, for no good reason, other than not being well-informed prior to booking your skip hire service.
Welcome to Eastern Skip Hire. We're a customer-focused skip bin hire and waste disposal service, owned and operated by a family. We get it, you have never ordered a skip before. At Eastern Skip Hire, we don't expect you to know or to understand how the Melbourne waste removal industry works. That is the point of having this page, where we will walk you through the process, so you will soon know how to order a skip bin in Melbourne's eastern suburbs and the Yarra Valley!
This page shows you the exact steps so you don’t waste time or money.
Read the full Same day delivery & Heavy recyclables policy here.
Step 1 — Pick your waste type
Not all waste is equal!
Different types of waste have varying recycling values; items like general household waste and junk have very little recycling value and are more expensive to dispose of, compared to concrete, as it is crushed and used as a road base. You need to select a waste category that best resembles the variety of items, materials and waste you intend to dispose of.
Pick the right category now, and you won’t get stung at the transfer station later.
Skip Bin Waste Categories:
-
Garden & Green Waste
Only 100% of the skip bins contents must be organic material from your garden, front or back yard, or from commercial properties gardens are also welcome. Green waste is made up of f branches and tree trunks under 250mm in diameter, leaves, grass (no soil), weeds of any description, agapanthus (no dirt attached otherwise it's light or builder waste, depending on the volume), sticks, lawn clippings, bushes, shrubs, etc.
-
Light General Waste
Green Waste, plus typical house clean-ups; furniture, plastics, cardboard, toys, clothes, kitchenware, glass, mirrors, wood, metal, car, motorcycle and bicycle parts, book and magazines, garden tools and out door furniture, light industrial waste and junk, general bits and pieces from in and around your home, office, factory, warehouse, schools, sporting clubs, etc.
-
Builders General Waste
Includes Green Waste, Light Waste categories, Plus - renovation rubble, full loads of hardwood and timber, plaster, packaging materials, carpet, roof sheeting, pipework; up to 10% of the skip bins volume can be heavy recyclable waste materials of any description.
-
Heavy Recyclable Materials (Soil & Concrete)
100% of the skip bins contents must be made up of these materials only: - soil, concrete, bricks, roof tiles, rubble, asphalt (no general rubbish mixed in).

When in doubt, call Wendy—two minutes on the phone is cheaper than the wrong bin.
Step 2 — Choose a skip bin or mini skip size (2m³, 3m³, 4m³, 6m³)
Skip Bins and Mini Skips are all about the Size, or the holding capacity of what they can legally carry.
Different-sized skips have different holding capacities. You need to access your pile of waste, try to visualise how many 6'L x 4'W x 9" high (sides) trailer loads you have. Then compare it to the holding capacity of the skip bin sizes listed below:
Skip Bin Sizes
-
2m³ Mini Skips ≈ 3.5 box trailers - 8off 240L Wheelie Bins — shed clear-outs, smaller jobs.
-
3m³ Small Skip Bins ≈ 5.5 trailers - 12 off 240L Wheelie Bins — solid all-rounder for most homes.
-
4m³ Skip Bins ≈ 7 trailers - 16 off 240L Wheelie Bins — bigger renovations/clean-ups.
-
6m³ Skip Bins ≈ 11 trailers - 24 off 240L Wheelie Bins — moving house, deceased estates, large decluttering jobs of houses, factories, shops, end of lease clean ups, downsizing of properties, etc..
Important: -
Heavy recyclables (soil/concrete/bricks/tiles) are 2m³ or 3m³ mini skips and skip bins only as a 100% heavy load.
-
4m³ & 6m³ (Builders General Waste) allow up to 10% heavy by volume.
For more information on skip bins and mini skip sizes, visit our skip bin sizes page for more details.
If you’re between sizes, go up one—overfilling above the rim isn’t allowed, it's called overloading skip bins.
Step 3 — Pick your skip bins delivery & collection dates
At Eastern Skip Hire we work Monday to Friday, we deliver and collect skip bins and mini skips weekdays only. We do not work weekends or public holidays (we're getting older now!), you need to schedule your delivery and collection services for any of the days we work.
You don't need an account to use our waste disposal services; all you need to do is order your skip bin hire services, and we do the rest!
How much notice do we need for your skips delivery?
We offer same day delivery, at no extra cost, you need to book by 12pm with Wendy 0417 514 763.
Or call a day or two before your required date.
When do you need your skip bin?
We provide skip bins on short notice, or you can order a skip bin up to a week in advance. It's entirely up to you; we'll make it happen, so don't stress out!
-
Same day delivery: call before 12 pm (Mon–Fri). Private property placements only; on-street placements require a council permit, which incurs an additional cost of anywhere from $100 to $200, depending on the council.
-
Online bookings: are for next day delivery, or we'll deliver your skip at any future date you require.
-
We confirm placement and provide an ETA—no vanishing acts.
If you have tight access or tricky driveway?
We would appreciate it if you would give us the heads up for the layout of your property. Wendy checks all property access on Google as best we can. However, low wires do generally not show up, some of the images we see are 10 yeas old, so they are not current. Please be up front if you have tight access, low hanging trees, wires, etc, and we’ll plan the placement.
Step 4 — Prepare the spot (so we can place it first go)
People need to consider prior to our truck arriving, where the skip bin is going to be placed. Because skip bins are delivered on a truck, we do get some issues, when people find it difficult to understand why we need to be cautious when delivering our skips, because:.
-
Our truck is alot wider than a car
-
The wheelbase on our truck is alot longer than a car
-
The truck is alot taller than your car
-
Our truck cannot always go where you want the skip to be placed, for many reasons.
Five minutes of prep saves truck shuffling and headaches.
If you take 5 minutes of your time to prepare your site, it makes our job a lot safer and a lot quicker.
-
Clear access:
Move cars before we arrive, we can call when we are on the way to assist you; either trim your low branches or the skip will be placed in front of them, we do not bush bash our truck and crane.
-
Surface:
We need a solid surface that can bare the weight of the truck. Regular concrete and asphalt driveways are no problem. Soft, loose ground can be a problem, as it can cause our vehicle to get bogged, so we avoid these areas.
-
Gates:
Unlocked gates at drop-off and collection are helpful if there are no animals in the yard.
-
Street placement:
If you want the skip bin placed on the street, you need a council permit. We organise the council permit for you. Permit prices and the validity period of the permit vary between councils.
If you’re unsure if the truck will fit in your gates, down your driveway, etc, call Wendy—it's always better to check than guess!
Step 5 — Load your skip bin right (avoid extra fees)
People need to be aware of the skip bin's size and the waste category they have ordered. We provide a card with all the waste categories when we deliver every skip bin. We mark the skip bin's size and waste category, along with the allocated weight limit for the service.
Guidelines are provided for every waste category; if you follow these guidelines, you will have no issues. However, many people push the envelope. They order a light waste skip, then load some concrete and dirt into the skip and wonder why they have exceeded the weight limit.
Keeping to the rules protects you from additional fees or rejected loads.
-
Do load:
Only the types of materials and items that match your waste category.
-
Don’t load:
No Hazardous or Prohibited Waste - asbestos/fibro, liquids/chemicals/paint, gas bottles, fuel cans, batteries, tyres, medical/biological waste.
-
No overloading skip bins:
Nothing above the top edge of the rim of the skip bin. Any part of the load above the rim will be removed, this is classed as being overloaded.
-
Recycling:
Every load goes to licensed transfer stations; recyclables are separated there.
Heavy recyclable materials either goes in heavy recycable or builder waste skip bins. If it’s mixed wrong, it’s charged like heavy — simple as that.
